Guide to the Vegetative Stage
The vegetative stage is where your plant builds its foundation. The goal is to grow a strong, healthy, and well-structured plant that can support heavy flowers later on. This phase can last anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on your desired plant size.
Environment is Key
Controlling the environment is crucial for vigorous vegetative growth.
- Light Cycle: Provide 18 hours of light and 6 hours of complete darkness per day (18/6). This long light period signals the plant to focus on growing leaves and branches.
- Temperature: Aim for a temperature between 70-85°F (22-29°C) when the lights are on.
- Humidity: Maintain a relative humidity (RH) between 40-60%.
- Airflow: Use a small oscillating fan to create a gentle breeze. This strengthens stems and helps prevent pests and mold.
Feeding Your Plants
During the vegetative stage, cannabis plants crave Nitrogen (N) to fuel leafy growth.
- Nutrients: Use a “Grow” or “Veg” specific nutrient formula that is rich in Nitrogen.
- Start Slow: Begin with a half-strength dose of the manufacturer’s recommendation and gradually increase as the plant grows larger.
- pH is Crucial: Ensure your water/nutrient solution is pH-balanced (5.8-6.5 for soil, 5.5-6.2 for hydro/coco). Incorrect pH will lock out nutrients, even if they are present.
Training for Bigger Yields
Training your plants during the vegetative stage can dramatically increase your final yield.
- Topping: Cut the main, topmost shoot of the plant. This encourages the plant to grow two new main colas instead of one, creating a bushier shape and more bud sites.
- Low-Stress Training (LST): Gently bend and tie down the branches to create an even, flat canopy. This ensures that all bud sites receive an equal amount of light, leading to more consistent and larger flowers.
Nutrient Recommendation
For a complete and balanced diet during the vegetative stage, we recommend the Athena Ag Blended Line. It provides all the essential macro and micronutrients your plants need for explosive growth. Find their full feed schedule here.
